Nové Hrady - Cemetery and mausoleum
Trail "People and their Landscape"
A cemetery can also be seen as a memory to important and less-important personalities of the past. In the lower part of the Nove Hrady cemetery, one can find for example the grave-monument of the Servite Order, including the names of Fathers Chalupa, Jindra, and Bonfilius Wagner. A few steps further is the grave of Anton Teichl, archivist of the Buqouy family and author of several books on the local and town history.
Dominating the cemetery is the pseudo-gothic mausoleum of the Buquoy family. The crypt was built in 1890-1892 after a design of the Prague architect Josef Schulz and built by master builder Karel Bůžek. The building reminds of the Schwarzenberg mausoleum in nearby Trebon. The difference is that the Buqouy mausoleum does not have proper crypts. The mausoleum has two sections: the vault in the ground floor and the chapel on the upper floor. Above the main entrance is a mosaic after the design of Max Švabinský.
Toady, the vault holds eight coffins with the remains of three married couples of the Buqouy family and of two of their relatives, the Cappy siblings. Other members of the Buqouy family have been interred in the original family crypt made by Countess Maria Magdalena in the St Peter and Paul church in Nove Hrady. Next to the mausoleum are located the graves of Soviet soldiers fallen in action in 1945. Behind the mausoleum are the gravestones of Gabriela von Thun und Hohenstein, Countess of Longueval-Buquoy and Count Josef von Thun-Hohenstein. It is unclear why those graves are located behind the mausoleum.
