Trail "People and their Landscape"
When reaching the town square, one cannot miss the former Buquoy Residence. Countess Maria Magdalena Buquoy had this building erected in 1634–1635. She was used to the comforts of the palaces of Brussels and Mons and as such did not want to live in the old Nove Hrady Castle. She bought several adjacent houses on the square. In their place, she built a residence fitting to her rank, as town palace after the example of the French Louvre palace. It remained the seat for the Buquoy family until they moved to the “New Palace” (also called the “Château”) in the early 1900s. After that, the Residence was used as office for estate management and as quarters for the Buqouy employees.
The Residence is a building complex of irregular form, enclosing two courtyards. The main entrance connects the town square through a corridor with the main courtyard. This courtyard was connected with the second, smaller courtyard by a next corridor. Much of the daily work was done from the rooms and sections facing the inner courtyard. Here you had stables for the horses, the wood workshop, coach house, and probably also different servant quarters and offices. The ground floor of the palace was also used as servant kitchen with large crockery room. It was connected with the cellars, where many different tastes of fine wines were stored.
The Residence has recently been completely renovated and reconstructed as a modern and comfortable Wellness Hotel (www.rezidencenh.cz/en/).
